Research Associate in Risks from Global Systems

Cambridge
Full-time
Closing date: 16 October 2022

Deadline: 16 October 2022

The Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER) invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate with a focus on systemic challenges that could lead to or exacerbate a global catastrophe.

CSER produces world-leading research on global catastrophic risk topics ranging from pandemics to the impacts of emerging technologies, engaging with policymakers at the national and international level, and launching major research initiatives in Cambridge.

The Role

This role would suit a specialist in a relevant global system: for example, an economist modelling constraint on critical global supply chains; an engineer interested in urban resilience to disaster; or a climate scientist interested in tipping points with catastrophic potential. The successful candidate will also be expected to manage and grow relevant networks across different academic, industry, civil society and policy communities.

Key activities associated with the role include:

  • Independent research to be published as papers, reports, and other more innovative forms of outputs.
  • Participation in Centre-wide activities, both internally and through contributions to our outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Development of a research agenda that stretches beyond their specialist interests to tie-together work on systemic challenges for global catastrophic risks.
  • Actively collaborate with leading researchers and research centres and with key contacts in government, international organisation and industry.

About You

Applicants must have:

  • A PhD in climate science, engineering, physics, systems science, economics or similar disciplines.
  • A strong scientific understanding of at least one global catastrophic risk.
  • Experience of engaging with diverse communities of experts, including academics across disciplines, industry partners, and policy makers.
  • Enthusiasm for joining an interdisciplinary team, focused on mitigating global catastrophe.
