This is a policy brief for the Association of Liberal Democrat Engineers and Scientists.

The mental health impacts of COVID-19 are expected to be very significant and could be the single greatest health burden caused by this pandemic in the long term. However, at present they are not being assessed at the population level, while not enough is being done to study these impacts and how to respond to them.

This briefing note explores the issues raised around mental health in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and encourages a genuine and robust compassionate response to COVID-19 which also requires ambitious and creative thinking in response to many social and economic problems.
